Housing

The housing market in Kansas City is as diverse as its population. For urban apartment options, the downtown area can offer just about any size and any price. This area has experienced a big boost after the city committed to develop 10,000 units over 10 years. Renters can also choose from new and developing units in the Library District and the River Market. The Library District also features condos that will range in price from $175,000 to $300,000.

Single-family options abound in the metro area. The median sale price for existing homes hovers near $155,000, while new home sale median prices have been over $240,000. The trend in Kansas City has been toward more single-family building, with the multifamily unit market quickly declining.

A very popular housing design in the Midwest and particularly in Kansas City is the split level or split foyer style home. Designed as a way to keep building costs down while still offering adequate space and a comfortable living environment, these types of homes are offered throughout the Kansas City area in established and newer developments in a full range of sizes. Other housing types include larger two-story in suburban-area neighborhoods, stately historic homes, smaller cottage type dwellings and sprawling estates with thousands of square footage with all the modern and luxury conveniences.
